For decades, coin grading has been driven entirely by human sight and subjective judgment. While the experienced eye of a master numismatist is indispensable for understanding historical context and assessing overall visual appeal, human interpretation naturally introduces inconsistencies. These variations make it challenging for collectors and investors to compare coins with absolute confidence, especially when two coins with the exact same numerical grade can look completely different in hand.
The industry is standing on the brink of a major transformation. The future of coin evaluation is not a battle of technology versus tradition, but rather a powerful partnership where both work side-by-side. By combining data-driven computer vision with traditional human expertise, grading is becoming more transparent, repeatable, and informative than ever before.
In our latest blog post, we explore how advanced imaging technology—like the QCG OCS200 CoinGradr—uses specialized lighting, lasers, and standardized measurements to document a coin's exact surface condition and luster. Learn how this objective data provides professional graders with the concrete evidence they need to support their conclusions, giving buyers, sellers, and hobbyists a stronger foundation for comparing coins.
